Icons: Las Virgencitas

In is a series of twelve paintings, Dariana Arias depicts women from around the world as the Virgin Mary. Using both historic and contemporary imagery, each portrait represents a conflict of societal expectations.  The artist examines the intersections of gender, race, hyper-sexualization, and empowerment in modern society and mainstream media.
