Two Anacostia shows look simultaneously forward and backward.

On Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., Billy Colbert’s “Gain the World, Lose Your Soul” opens at Honfleur Gallery. The Washington painter’s edgy work reconfigures pop imagery to critique the direction of modern society. Also on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., Rachael Beamer and Lindsay Talley’s “Instantaneous?” opens at the nearby Gallery at Vivid Solutions. The two-photographer showcase examines the old-fashioned notion of instant photography in a digital age. Both shows are free and run through Oct. 22.
