“Do Not Enter”

JUNE 2007

Photographs produced by Northern Irelands’s Mervyn Smyth were presented on June 30th, 2007 to a large crowd both local and international.

Show Description: Anacostia Exposed, was a collaborative investigation of one of Washington D.C.’s more neglected areas,… Anacostia. In partnership with the Dept. of Arts, Culture and Leisure in Northern Ireland the gallery was able to bring Mervyn Smyth to Washington D.C. in April 2007 to document the area through his eyes. Mr. Smyth’s photographs were shot and then developed in Belfast, NI. At this point the photographs were then sent back to the US for area poets to write in response to. This compelling collaboration between poetry and photography created a thoughtful and introspective collection of works.

Poets included: Fred Joiner (Lead poet and collaborator,) Marlene Hawthrone Thomas, Derrick Weston Brown, Katy Richey, Abdul Ali, Kyle Dargan, Alan King, Rosetta Thurman, Tony Medina and Kirsten Kierney (N.I.) Special thanks to The American Poetry Museum for their on going support of this project and to the photography students from ARCH and FAN for their participation.

‘Girl Machine”

AUGUST 2007

The installation based exhibit, Girl Machine was presented by New York based artist, Katie Cercone on August 4th, 2007.

Show Description: Funded by The Deputy Mayors Office of Planning and Economic Development Girl Machine is an exhibit and installation exploring the intersection of girlhood and American Consumer Culture. The birthday party – ultimately a celebration of birth/life – becomes a ritual in which little girls experience “love” and “attention” from their parents, friends and relatives by way of cake, ice cream and pretty pink packages. The project turns a critical eye to the way in which stratagems of advertising have caused girl/womanhood, intimacy, food and personal care products to psychosocially overlap. A workshop for teenaged girls and women was held in conjunction with the exhibit covering topics such as body image, good nutrition and healthy decision making.

Other exhibitors: Holly Andres (photography) and Jeanette May (photography and pencil.) Speakers: Aissata Pinto da Costa (former Paris Elite model) and Tazima Davis (nutritionist.)

SEPTMEBER 2007

“Gesture”

On September 11th, 2007 Manju Shandler brought her creation, Gesture, from New York City to Washington D.C.

Show Description: The September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center buildings shocked and disarmed the modern world. This act of hate resulted in the death of over 2700 people. This number is almost inconceivable. The painting installation, Gesture gives a tangible allegory to the size of this loss by grouping together one brick-sized painting for every life taken on that day. When hung together as a single installation, the paintings form a grid of vibrant blocks of red, yellow, white, black and pink that subtly shift from color to color. On closer examination each painting bares its own mark, paying tribute to the uniqueness of each individual who perished on September 11th and the massive repercussions of this event on society as a whole.

Gesture is a tribute to those who perished in New York City on September 11, 2001, as seen through the eyes of one New York artist. This Exhibition and a “Gesture” youth-based workshop at the Two Rivers School in D.C. were funded by the Deputy Mayors Office of Planning and Economic Development.

Arie Mandelbaum

NOVEMBER 2007

November 10th, 2007 - The Honfleur Gallery exhibits artwork by Brussels based artist, Arie Mandelbaum

Show Description:
Arie Mandelbaum is a seasoned abstract artist. He created his own Tempera Paint using only splashes of color to create loosely vivid, large paintings on paper of his girlfriend, lions and reflections of his past. These paper paintings are mounted onto linen canvas - some stretched and others left in their natural state. Mr. Mandelbaum describes his pieces as a mix between sex and politics. Honfleur will be representing this body of work for the next two years.
